Ukraine Association of Biobank (UAB) was established in 2017 to promote and develop an Ukraine biobank network to benefit patients, researchers, industry, and the economy. The network commenced in 2013 with two Institutes of Medical Sciences of Ukraine biobanks and currently consists of biobanks in the main Institutes of Medical Sciences in Ukraine. The Ukraine Association Biobank coordinates the network procedures, based on ESBB, ISBER and NCI guidelines, are standardized across the network. Policies and documents—Patient Consent Policy, Patient Information Sheet, Biobank Consent Form and Sample Application Form have been agreed upon (after robust discussion on Association) for use in each hospital and Medical Institutes. An optimum sequence for document preparation and submission for review is outlined. The objectives of Ukraine Association of Biobank are: 1) To develop an Ukraine hospital biobank network using international guidelines expertise for patient-focused research 2) To provide fair access to uniformly obtained, processed, and stored samples and data for academic researchers and industry to collaborate on Ukraine and international projects that are scientifically and ethically approved 3) To develop technologies that will lead to more precise diagnosis and targeted therapies, while stimulating Ukrain’s economy, through genuine collaboration among academic researchers, pathologists, and industrial Research and Development 4) To produce a biobank network template for the government and other funders to develop and sustain as part of the patient care pathway in Ukrain’s principal hospitals.
