Key lines of its research activities are: - research into the behaviour of rocks and massifs; their destruction and control of rock stresssedly-deformed state; - developing scientific fundamentals of mining processes, techniques and technologies of mineral extraction and processing; - developing physical, engineering and geological fundamentals of technologies for mine-methane recovery; - studying the processes and technologies of coal and mine-methane energy transformation; investigating operation parameters and structure of power complexes; energy efficiency and safety of mining facilities. Main achievements and developments: Among the achievements of the Institute are several major ones that have set new guidelines for developing mining methods and technologies in both underground and open mineral extraction, their preparation and processing; ensuring reliable power supply in coal-mining regions; satellite mine-methane capture and utilization. On the basis of those the Institute has designed a whole new conceptual approach to coal-field development at great depths, where negative and harmful factors do not counteract the technologies proposrd but are even engaged in useful operation. This approach has been successfully tested in the most difficult mining and geological conditions of extracting various mineral products.
